American settlers in this Spanish-controlled region (encompassing parts of modern Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida) declared independence, raising the flag to symbolize their brief sovereignty before the United States annexed the territory after roughly 74 days. The flag’s simple design, likely inspired by earl
